October 6, 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians, As part of our ongoing effort to be a good neighbor and keep an open line of communication with our parents, I would like to take a moment to share information with you regarding an event that took place at our school. Today, we had an unplanned lockdown due to police activity in our area. The security guard immediately reported to me that there was a police presence near our school and it looked as though they were in pursuit of another vehicle. Our protocol is to go on lockdown when we feel there may be a danger to our students and we did. We swept the building to ensure all of our students were safe. We notified central office and contacted the Dearborn Heights police. The Heights police showed up very quickly and in force. The students may have seen the officers with their long guns, which were out as they assessed the situation outside our building. Once assessed and they were sure we were safe, they ascertained the danger was no longer in our area and we were released from lock down. Please use this event as an opportunity to talk with your children about the seriousness of any drill we do at school and to follow the directions of the adults in charge; information and questions are answered after the drills are over. Our staff is always concerned for the safety and well-being of our students; they did a fabulous job today. We pride ourselves in creating a safe environment for your children when they are here at school. Magnet, DCMST, and Michael Berry have always been and will continue to be a safe haven for your children. Working together we will keep our school and neighborhood a great place to live, work, play and learn. Sincerely, Winifred L. Green, Ed.D., Principal |
